The Importance of Water Conservation

Using water every single day is something we all do. We use water for many essential things in our lives such as drinking, cleaning, and watering our plants. However, some use water in excess for many reasons which can affect how much fresh water is available for the future. Fresh water is a natural resource used for drinking that is limited around the world. Let us break down for you how to save water and save money with water conservation.

Definition of Water Conservation

Water conservation is the act and strategy of simply saving water for current and future use. It is very common to think of water conservation as simply ‘taking shorter showers’ or ‘preventing the sink to run while brushing your teeth’. While these are common activities associated with water conservation, there are many other ways to reduce water consumption that don’t impact our daily routines. Making simple changes to help preserve natural freshwater habitats such as lakes and rivers are important for continued water use.

The Impact of Conserving Water

Average Water Use
According to the EPA, each American uses an average of around 88 gallons of water a day at home! That is approximately 734 lbs. of just water alone. If every single person were able to use just a little less water, think about the impact and results that could have on our environment, our cities, and our well-being. If the average family were to install water-efficient fixtures and appliances, not only would that family save around $380 annually, they would use approximately 20% less water overall.

Water Leaks
Another big water waster is leaks. The average family can waste 180 gallons per week, or 9,400 gallons of water annually, from household leaks. That’s equivalent to the amount of water needed to wash more than 300 loads of laundry. Identifying and repairing these leaks can pay big dividends.

Water Shortage
Location and access to fresh water can also drive the need for water conservation. For many people around the Midwest in America, the Great Lakes provide a great amount of freshwater. However, according to a 2014 Government Accountability Report, 40 out of 50 state water managers expect water shortages under average conditions in some portion of their states over the next decade. In states such as Nevada, Utah, California and other dry desert regions, access to fresh water is difficult. It costs money and resources to transport water where it is needed.
