Distilled water, on the other hand, is produced through a process of evaporation and condensation. It involves heating water until it turns to steam, then cooling the steam to collect water. This process is very effective in removing minerals, salts, and other non-volatile contaminants.

While both methods produce purified water, the level of purity and taste can differ. RO water retains some minerals, which can contribute to the taste, while distilled water is demineralized, often resulting in a flat or bland taste.

What Is Reverse Osmosis Water Purification?

The reverse osmosis process is a popular water purification method used in many homes and commercial settings. The process involves forcing water under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane designed to filter out a wide array of contaminants.

At the heart of an RO system is the RO membrane. This thin, tightly-wound sheet of material allows only water molecules to pass through, effectively removing up to 99% of water impurities, including heavy metals like lead, salts, PFAS, and certain types of bacteria and viruses.

After the water passes through the reverse osmosis membrane, it often goes through additional stages of filtration to further enhance the taste and quality of the water. This can include activated carbon filters to remove chlorine and other organic compounds, and remineralization stages to add beneficial minerals back into the water.

Advantages of a Reverse Osmosis System

There are several advantages to using reverse osmosis for water purification. Firstly, RO systems can effectively remove a wide array of contaminants, including lead, mercury, chlorine, and fluoride, along with certain bacteria and viruses. This makes it an excellent option for those seeking the purest water possible.

Secondly, reverse osmosis filtration systems are compact and easy to install under the sink, making them a convenient option for many households. They also require minimal maintenance, usually only needing a filter change every six months to a year, depending on the quality of the incoming water and usage.

Lastly, by removing contaminants and some minerals from the water, RO systems can significantly improve the taste of your water. This is especially noticeable in areas with heavily chlorinated municipal water or places with high levels of certain contaminants.

Disadvantages of Reverse Osmosis Systems

While reverse osmosis offers numerous benefits, it’s important to be aware of its potential downsides. One of the main drawbacks of RO systems is their water wastage. Due to the pressure needed to push water through the membrane, some water is left behind as waste. This can result in 3 to 5 gallons of wastewater for every gallon of purified water produced.

Another potential disadvantage is the removal of beneficial minerals. RO systems are so effective that they also filter out calcium, magnesium, and other minerals that are beneficial for health. Some systems resolve this issue by reintroducing these minerals in the final stages of the filtration process.

Lastly, RO systems can be more costly upfront than other filtration systems and require a pressurized water supply to function effectively. This could potentially lead to additional costs if a booster pump is required.

What Is a Distillation Process?

Distillation is one of the oldest methods of water purification. It involves heating water until it boils and becomes steam, which helps produce distilled water. This steam from the boiling water is then collected and condensed back into liquid form in a separate container. As most impurities are left behind in the original container, the condensed water is much purer, and can be found in some types of bottled water.

Distillation effectively removes a wide variety of contaminants, including heavy metals, salts, and certain chemicals. However, it might not be as effective against certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that have boiling points lower than or close to water. These can evaporate with the water and may remain in the distilled product.

Advantages of Distillation

One of the main advantages of distillation is its ability to remove a broad range of contaminants. It effectively eliminates bacteria, viruses, parasites, heavy metals, and inorganic compounds, providing highly purified water.

Another advantage is that distillation systems are typically easy to use and require little maintenance. They do not require filter changes, making them a low-maintenance option for water purification.

Furthermore, distilled water has a variety of uses beyond drinking and cooking. Its high purity makes it suitable for use in certain appliances, like CPAP machines and humidifiers, and for certain applications, such as in laboratories or medical facilities.

Disadvantages of Distillation

Despite its advantages, distillation also comes with certain drawbacks. The process is relatively slow and consumes a significant amount of energy, which can lead to higher electricity costs.

Additionally, similar to RO, distillation removes beneficial minerals along with contaminants, resulting in demineralized water. This not only can affect the taste of the water, making it seem flat or bland, but it may also not provide certain minerals needed for optimal health.

Lastly, distillation may not effectively remove some volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and certain chemicals that have a boiling point lower than water. These can vaporize with the steam and be present in the distilled water.

How To Choose the Right Process for Your Needs
